Communications

Mission Statement:  To provide the maximum level of support to the Memphis Fire Services Division by developing and maintaining enhanced emergency communications and reporting systems.

The Memphis Fire Communications Bureau utilizes 69 dispatchers to receive and dispatch over 120 thousand calls annually throughout the Memphis area. In 1982, a custom written program utilizing COBAL language was introduced to the Memphis Fire Services Division, and the division still utilizes that program on a 2003 pSeries RISC6000 IBM eServer, model 7026 with a two-node cluster.

In addition to handling emergency calls, the Fire Communications Bureau coordinates the division's telephone maintenance and repair services, provides electrical maintenance for all division facilities, and provides technical support for all personal computers and computer systems. Radio communication is also handled through the Fire Communications Bureau.
