Weights and Measures
"Weights and Measures may be ranked among the necessaries of life to every individual of human society." -John Quincy Adams, 1821

The Memphis Weights and Measures program is responsible for the registration and verification of commercial devices utilized in commerce and trade in Memphis. The department inspects scales, fuel dispensers, and taximeters for accuracy along with performing package checking and price verification audits annually.

Mission:
The Weights and Measures department plays a critical role in the Memphis marketplace by protecting consumers and retailers from unfair business practices. This is accomplished by registering devices, conducting audits, verifying procedures, and checking device accuracy.

  • Ensure that commercial devices (scales, taxi, fuel dispensers) used for the sale of commodities by weight and measure are registered and accurate.
  • Prevent unfair practices by weight and measurement.
  • Ensure proper labeling of products sold by weight and measure (a gallon of gas is a gallon, a pound of meat is a pound of meat etc.)
