The Flood Protection System (FPS) provides internal drainage during periods of high river stages. The system utilizes 7 Flood Control pumping stations, 14 reservoirs, flood walls, and earthen levees to protect low areas from rising water. There is a continuous line of protection along the Wolf River consisting of concrete flood walls and earthen levees from the Welcome Center at the foot of Jefferson Ave to Douglass Park. To the south along Nonconnah Creek a continuous earthen levee runs from near its mouth to just east of the intersection of Industrial Ave. and Prospect Street.

As the Mississippi River reaches 26 feet on the Memphis gage the drainage of surface runoff becomes impaired in some locations. Flood Control pumping stations are placed into service to provide drainage during such periods. Shown below are the approximate river stages at which each pump station is put into service.
