Latino Student Success Grant
In an attempt to increase the Latino high-school graduation rate and post-secondary enrollment, the Lumina Foundation awarded the city of Memphis in conjunction with the Tennessee Higher Education Committee $600,000 in November 2011. Coming at a time when 6 percent of the Shelby-County population is Hispanic, the Latino Student Success Grant has enabled the hiring of full-time mentors both at Kingsbury High School, at which one-third of the student body is considered Latino, and at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Additionally, the money has been used to launch a bilingual information and marketing campaign aimed to make the inroads to a post-secondary degree more accessible. The money has also been used to increase student financial aid and services.
